Camera

A good DSLR or mirrorless camera is essential. These cameras offer the best balance of quality, versatility, and portability. If you’re on a budget, consider models like the Canon EOS Rebel T7 or Sony Alpha a6000.

While the Sony Alpha a6000 is a bit more expensive than the Rebel T7, it has better features and is much lighter. If you can, I recommend buying the camera secondhand from Amazon or local photographers.

Lenses

The first thing you should know about buying lenses (often referred to as “glass”) is that it gets very expensive very quickly.

While a versatile lens, such as a Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L, is a great choice for Venice, it is currently $1,799 on Amazon (at the time of writing). For this reason, we are recommending some cheaper lenses that can still help produce great pictures.

A fast prime lens, like a 50mm f/1.8, can also be useful for low-light conditions and creating beautiful bokeh effects. This lens has a permanent place in my camera bag. It’s best used for street photography and portraits.

If you are more interested in capturing locations and moments that are a bit further from you, the Canon RF100-400mm f/5.6-8 is a great option. It’s best used for architecture and sunsets.

Tripod

A lightweight, sturdy tripod is crucial for long-exposure shots, especially if you plan to capture Venice’s Grand Canal or Piazza San Marco at night. Look for a tripod that’s easy to carry around as you’ll be doing a lot of walking.

Look for tripods that are made from aluminum (budget-friendly) or carbon fiber (more expensive).

The Joby JB01507 GorillaPod is a compact, versatile tripod designed for mirrorless or DSLR cameras (they sell them for cell phones too!). With flexible, wrappable legs, a 360° panning head, and weighing a slender 13.8 ounces, it ensures optimal shots on any terrain.

While it weighs a little more at 3.5 lbs, the Manfrotto Befree Advanced Aluminum Tripod is a compact, lightweight, and robust solution for on-the-go photographers.

The nice part about the Manfrotto is that it is compatible with a variety of common head attachments should you want to change it in the future. It’s a sturdier tripod that helps with those beautiful long-exposure shots of the Santa Maria Della Salute that we are all familiar with.

Memory Cards

Venice is incredibly photogenic, so you’ll likely be taking a lot of photos. Bring extra memory cards to ensure you don’t run out of storage space. While there are a bunch of brands out there that make memory cards, I recommend sticking with a reputable company like SanDisk. Grab one or two SanDisk 256GB memory cards and call it a day.

Camera Bag

You can often find bundle deals for new cameras that come with a free bag, but they’re often not the best quality and you can’t fit much in them.

A good camera bag will protect your gear from the elements and make it easier to carry around. Look for a bag that’s waterproof or water-resistant.

I recommend the Manfrotto Bumblebee. It’s the one that I first bought when I journeyed into photography and still my go-to when traveling. It has plenty of pouches, including one for your tripod, and two compartments with dividers to keep your new camera equipment safe.
