This stunning stretch of coastline is home to some of the most picturesque villages in all of Italy, not to mention some of the best food. In this guide, we’ll tell you everything you need to know about traveling from Rome to the Amalfi Coast. We’ll also give you tips on what to see while you’re there!
How Do I Get from Rome to Amalfi Coast?
The good news is it’s not too difficult to get to the Amalfi Coast from Rome. The bad news is there aren’t any direct trains or buses that run from Rome to the Amalfi Coast.
With that being said, there are a few options available. Whether you prefer to take public transportation or want to rent a car and head there yourself, we provide several options for you.
How Do I Get to the Amalfi Coast by Train?
The easiest and best way to get from Rome to the Amalfi Coast is by taking the Trenitalia train from Stazione di Roma Termini (Rome’s train station) to Napoli Centrale (Naples’ train station).
It’s a 140-mile trek that takes around 1 hour and 10 minutes. It’s a nice ride as you move through Italy’s scenic Lazio and Campania regions.
The Rome to Naples train leaves Rome Termini station two or three times per hour, depending on which train you decide to take. Some slower, less expensive regional trains are available, but I advise just taking a more direct route.
Tickets can be purchased at the ticket office or from a vending machine. If you’re taking the train on a weekday, it’s best to purchase your ticket in advance as the trains can get crowded and expensive.
Tickets range from €17 to €70 (one way), but they’re cheaper by booking in advance.
From Naples to Vietri Sul Mare
The journey from Naples to Vietri Sul Mare takes around 1 hour and 3 minutes. If you opt for the fastest train, it takes just 37 minutes.
Trenitalia runs direct services on this route, so you don’t have to worry about switching trains. This makes it an easy experience from start to finish.
From Naples, you’ll board a train at either Napoli Giantuco or Napoli San Giovanni Barra station and head on down to Vietri Sul Mare.
At the time of writing, tickets are between €5-6 per person for a one-way trip.
From Naples to Sorrento
If Sorrento is closer to your final destination, you’ll want to take the local train (Circumvesuviana). It’s a direct route that only costs €3-4 per person for a one-way trip.
If you want to head to any other town within the Amalfi Coast, you must take a bus or taxi. Thankfully, they’re pretty easy to identify, as there are multiple signs in Sorrento pointing you in the right direction.
How Do I Get to the Amalfi Coast by Bus?
Another option for getting from Rome to the Amalfi Coast is by bus. This is a great option if you’re traveling on a budget or don’t mind making a few stops along the way.
The journey from Rome to the Amalfi Coast takes around 5 hours by bus. You’ll take a bus from one of Rome’s main bus stations, like Tiburtina or Termini, to Salerno.
While Salerno isn’t technically an Amalfi Coast town, it’s just two miles from Vietri Sul Mare. You can either take a bus or ferry to your final destination.
Tickets for the Rome to Salerno bus journey cost around €20 per person.
We recommend taking a train from Rome to Naples, though, as it drastically cuts down on time and won’t cost an arm and a leg. If you want to take a bus from Naples to the Amalfi Coast, head to the bus station next to Naples’ main train station. This bus will take you along the coast, where you can get off at any one of the following locations:
- Sorrento
- Sant’Agata
- Positano
- Amalfi
- Ravello
- Vietri Sul Mare
How Do I Get to the Amalfi Coast by Boat?
Your best option is to hop on a train at Roma Termini train station and head to Salerno.
Once in Salerno, it’s a quick 35-minute trip by boat to the Amalfi Coast. Go to the Piazza Concordia in Salerno, and a boat will take you to Amalfi for €8. There’s only one departure per hour, though, so make sure you check departure times beforehand.
How Do I Get from Rome Airport to Amalfi Coast?
If you’re flying into Rome, you’ll want to take a direct train from the airport to Naples. The Leonardo Express is a direct train that departs every 30 minutes and takes about 1 hour to get from Rome’s Fiumicino Airport to Naples’ main train station.
Once in Naples, you can take a train, bus, or boat to the Amalfi Coast. We recommend taking the train from Naples to Salerno, as it’s a direct route and only takes 1-2 hours. From Salerno, you can take a boat to any town along the Amalfi Coast.
How to Get To Amalfi Coast by Car?
If you’re looking to take an Uber in Italy, you might be surprised that it’s not as easy as you’d think. Uber is only in Rome and only Uber Black (it’s way more expensive than calling a cab). So this means you’ll have to rent a car if you want to drive to Amalfi.
The drive from Rome to the Amalfi Coast takes about 4 hours. You’ll take the A1 highway from Rome to Naples, then the SS163 from Naples to the Amalfi Coast.
This is a scenic drive, but we don’t recommend it if you’re unfamiliar with Italian roads. The roads are very windy, and there are a lot of turns. Plus, parking can be difficult to find along the Amalfi Coast.
If you decide to drive, make sure you rent a car with GPS. This will help you navigate the winding roads and ensure you don’t get lost.
